"Never Be You" started as a little production idea I had in 2015. I was just helping out a friend with a school project and I kind of knew my way around Logic. I loved it so much I just took the idea, ran with it and could never get it out of my head.
Fast forward to last year, I got all of the stems together and worked with @maikamaile to bring new life into something I felt was so good and necessary for me. I already had the song written, I just needed some extra sheen and Maika's incredibly good instincts. Once we finished this song we just sat in the studio and listened to it on repeat at least 10 times. I don't know what else to say but it just felt magical. You can't make moments like that up.
Some technical things happened where we couldn't access that song anymore, so I remotely sent Maika the stems again and re-recorded the vocals on my kitchen. I almost thought the song would never happen, but the magic was back.
Now I share this piece of my heart and memory with all of you. It's a song about independence. It's about being having incredible hindsight and being able to reject things that aren't good for you anymore. I had a person in mind while writing this but I sometimes think this song is actually about an old version of myself and I'm now telling the old me that was so riddled in self-doubt and validation that I don't need them anymore. I can be free.
